2 sunglasses stories before we enter 2016

I have a couple of interesting stories to share with you today, from the wonderful world of sunglasses.

Sunglasses: Taking care of business

The words, “taking care of business”, may not mean much to you. However, Elvis Presley fans will recognize them instantly. It’s a phrase, sometimes abbreviated to TCB, which was popular with “the king”.

This month saw the release of an Elvis Presley inspired sunglasses design. The design is based around the kind of sunglasses that Elvis wore in the late 1960’s and the 1970’s. And right there on the arm of the sunglasses are the letters TCB. A subtle addition to the design, which will immediately let any fellow Elvis fans know that you’re a fan too.

Whilst the design may not appeal to everyone (and no design does), I think Elvis fans will lap these up.

Can sunglasses prevent you from getting cold sores?

This story really surprised me.

If you suffer with cold sores, also known as herpes, you may be surprised to know that there’s (apparently) a link between ultraviolet rays and the condition. It seems that being exposed to UV radiation from the sun, has long been known to cause herpes outbreaks. This could be one of the reasons why some lip balms contain sunblock as one of their ingredients.

So, if you find yourself suffering from cold sores, it may be worth protecting your eyes as well as your lips from sunlight. I'm not sure how deep the research is on protecting your eyes from UV rays and an increased chance of contracting herpes, but it could be worth trying.

Plus, it's a lot healthier for your eyes.

Smart sunglasses and smart eyewear break through in 2015

As we approach Christmas, you tend to see very few news stories related to sunglasses. Yes, the sunglasses industry is still in full flow, but it’s understandable that sunglasses companies save their new releases up for the warmer months.

What we do get this time of year, are lots of lists ranking the top 10 (whatever) of the year. One such list immediately grabbed my attention. It’s from the extremely popular Gizmag.com – a website dedicated to bringing us the latest news on new and emerging technologies.

Smart eyewear tops the list

So, Gizmag very recently listed their top 10 “outdoor gadgets and wearables” of 2015. Right there at the very top of the list was a pair of electrochromatic sunglasses. I wrote about them back in the summer. You can read all about them here. In essence, these very cool sunglasses are able to go from darkened lenses to clear lenses in way under 1 second. This is great for safety and the overall comfort of the wearer.

There was just one smartwatch included on the list… and that was at the very bottom.

Why do I mention this?

Well,if you have been reading my articles over the past year or so, you will know that I have long believed that smart eyewear (both sunglasses and prescription glasses), will become the most popular wearable technology. This is yet another example of the way that smart eyewear is picking up attention. This, despite the huge media coverage of smartwatches from the likes of Apple and Motorola. Smaller companies in smart eyewear space are gaining traction, based on the value they bring and it's winning them new fans all the time.

It will be interesting in 2016, to see if smart eyewear carries on innovating and gaining media coverage, as it has over the past year. Only time will tell!

Smart sunglasses for 2020 and beyond

On Monday, I was listening to a radio show in my car, which almost took my breath away. On the show, a panel of experts were looking at various technology predictions for the years ahead. One of the predictions really grabbed my attention. And that’s what I’m going to share with you today.

As you may have guessed, the subject was smart eyewear, including sunglasses. The experts said that they looked at how far the technology has advanced over the past 5 years. The advances have indeed been amazing. Smart glasses / sunglasses have gone from bulky and awkward looking, to more like regular eyewear. At the same time, the computing technology packed into them has increased massively.

Smart sunglasses and eyewear

One of the predictions made by the show’s panel blew my mind. They said that within the next 5 to 10 years, it could be possible for someone wearing smart eyewear, to stream what they can see and what they can hear, in real time, to a 3rd party.

Think about that for a moment.

One of the applications for the technology, was very interesting. Imagine an untrained person at the scene of a medical emergency. They would be able to stream a live video / audio feed to a doctor. The doctor would then be able to see and hear everything, almost as if they were there on the scene. The doctor could then tell them what to do, in order for the patient to stand the best chances of a recovery. I regularly cycle during the day and always were sunglasses or clear, cycling glasses. Over the years, I have witnessed the aftermath of a few road accidents. All I have is a basic knowledge of how to help. If my sunglasses had been smart sunglasses, I would have been a lot more useful.

Another example was law enforcement. A vulnerable person would be able to press a button and send their exact location to law enforcement officers along with audio and video of the incident they are in. This would not only make it easy to find them, it would also provide video evidence of any offence that may have taken place.

In theory, you could do both of the above examples using a smartphone. However, there are 2 very big advantages of using smart eyewear.

Firstly, it’s a lot harder to keep the camera on the incident, when using a smartphone. Smart sunglasses / eyewear are always focused on what matters, because they record whatever you’re looking at.

Secondly, it isn’t possible to record someone using a smartphone, without them knowing. Whilst this may not be an issue when assisting with a medical emergency, it certainly is if you’re in a threatening situation. By recording the situation with your sunglasses, you are giving no indication of what you’re doing. Simply looking at what’s happening is enough for you to covertly transmit live video of the scene.

It seems the major technological barrier to making this a reality is less to do with the smart sunglasses / eyewear and more to do with infrastructure. To be able to press a button and call the police or call for medical assistance is simple. However, to press a button and for them to immediately be able to receive the video stream from your smart sunglasses is another matter. It relies on a fast and reliable Internet connection, plus software at the recipient’s end, which is capable of instantly connecting to your video stream. Then there is the potential for the smart eyewear to be hacked, thus allowing a hacker access to whatever you’re looking at.

This tantalising look into the future of smart sunglasses and smart eyewear in general is truly exciting. Yes, it comes with a few hurdles that will need to be resolved, but the potential is amazing.

Doggy sunglasses to protect our 4 legged friends

In the past, I’ve shared stories with you about all kinds of sunglasses. Including one story about a cat, who became a reality TV star wearing glitzy sunglasses. Well, today it’s time for dogs to get some sunglasses-related love.

Sunglasses for dogs

Rex Specs, a Wyoming based firm, has developed a range of sunglasses for dogs. Okay, they look way more like sun-goggles, see above. However, although they look cool, they’re actually a lot more practical than fashionable.

The idea came from Rex Specs founders Aiden Doane and Jesse Emilo. The dog loving couple also share a love of the beautiful Wyoming mountains and often took their dogs on treks with them. As a result of the challenging conditions, both of their dogs (a Husky and a German Shepherd), developed unpleasant eye conditions.

The Husky suffered with extreme sunburn around the eyes. The German Shepherd developed something called Pannus, which is an eye inflammation. Both conditions are caused by the sun’s UV rays. Protective sun-goggles would greatly relieve the ailments, but after much searching, the dog’s owners were unable to find a good enough solution.

How a business was born

Apparently, at the time, the only solutions they could find either didn’t stay in place (which is essential) or they had too narrow a field off view, which restricted the dog’s overall vision. This inspired the dog lovers to make their own doggy eyewear, from materials they had around their home.

This has moved on greatly and they have now created a final product, which is made from a comfortable foam frame, with a single, wide polycarbonate lens. As you can see from the photo above, the sun-goggles are designed to snugly fit the dog’s muzzle, whilst allowing the dog to easily open its mouth for eating / drinking etc.

If, like me, you’re a dog lover, you’ll know that some dogs are not keen on having anything attached to them. Especially their head. The Rex Specs website acknowledges this and says that well-trained dogs are more likely to accept the sun-goggles without too much aggravation. However, they clam that given enough time and training, any dog can be trained to wear the goggles. They add that currently, the doggy sunglasses are only available for larger dogs, though they plan to make them for smaller dogs in the future.

Over the years, through medical and dietary advances, dogs are living healthier and for longer than ever before. I see this kind of product as a natural extension of the way we care for our four legged friends, if we live in areas where their eyes are likely to be exposed to high UV, wind and dust. In short, anything that helps dogs stay healthier and happier, is good with me.
